It has been one hell of a ride for Charlie Townsend and his team of Angels. ‘Charlie’s Angels’ is one of the most popular franchises in the world, with a global fan following and many big stars such as Drew Barrymore and Farah Fockett being associated with the series.
However, when we now see ‘Charleys Angels’ as a cultural phenomenon, it is difficult to accept the (relatively) humble origins of the franchise. Everything grows over the years, even the franchises and Engels are the greatest proof of this fact. In its first incarnation, ‘Charlies Angels’ was another spy TV show with a girl-power twist. Dee, it starred some big names, but no one expected the show to be on a large scale.
In fact, the way the show was first conceived was a very campus mess that was more than a little sexist. In the early development stages, the show was called ‘The Alley Cats’ and featured three women who live in an alleyway and like some weird mix of BDSM, ‘Sesame Street’ and ‘Honey West’ Wears whips and chains.
Oh, and the women had to be named Allison, Lee, and Catherine so that their names would become titles, which (as much as we love) is just downright ridiculous.
Thankfully, the idea was dropped at the insistence of Kate Jackson, who had some creative control over the show in addition to being one of the stars.
If they have moved forward with that concept, there is a very good chance that it will never get to the pilot but is now on the verge of turning into an international detective story on the lines of ‘Charlies Angels” James Bond ‘and’. Kingsman has a franchise with its upcoming film which is going to hit theaters very soon.
And to think, when the pilot for the show was first filmed, ABC thought it was the worst idea for a TV show anyone had ever come up with. According to Sunday Post, the network was so surprised by the pilot’s ratings that they actually aired a second time to make sure.
In all honesty, the fact that three beautiful women starred in sexy clothes on the show certainly helped ‘Charlize Angels’ to reach the number one spot, but since then, the franchise has certainly evolved.
After more than 40 years, the Angels are going international in an upcoming film starring Kristen Stewart, Naomi Scott, and Ella Balinska. The story of the new ‘Charlie’s Angels’ will continue ‘Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle’ (2003), with several teams of Angels working around the world to expand the organization. It is a long way from where this story began and we cannot wait to see what the future will be like.
‘Charlie’s Angels’ will hit theaters on November 15.
