The last saw posts on LinkedIn for 11 new recruitments at Obsidian Entertainment, the developers of RPGs like Pillars of Eternity and Fallout: New Vegas. The job profiles required vary from lead narrative designer to user interface designer.
Several of them list a thorough understanding of Unreal Engine 4 would be a bonus, as well as quoting “first-person melee combat gameplay”, “combat with an added focus on an out of the world first-person melee experience”, and “combat actions utilizing both first and third-person animations”.
There’s also a reference for “branching dialogue”, “conversations and cut scenes”, and “day/night cycles”.
They give a picture of a game that resembled more like The Outer Worlds than Pillars of Eternity or South Park, though job profiles don’t really give anything on the game as it is still early days.
The network programmer position also affirms that Obsidian is searching for experienced programmers to develop the network and multiplayer gameplay systems using the Unreal Engine.
The online multiplayer facility wouldn’t be an unexplored arena for a game from the studio behind Neverwinter Nights 2, but in honesty, it id not what they’re known for.
Other requirements call the game they’re hiring for “our next great multi-platform RPG”, and given this would be their first project begun after Microsoft’s overhaul of Obsidian both PC and Xbox are a given.
The Outer Worlds will be available from October 25 and can be played on the Epic Games Store and Xbox Game Pass.
Whatever the all-new RPG may be, it’s worth the excitement to know the studio – which was acquired by Microsoft back in 2018 as the company starts to look towards Xbox Project Scarlett – is working on a new RPG for various platforms. Going by social media reactions, it seems like the gamers are really excited about this latest announcement.
